Geneva, Switzerland.

The banquet room was full for the evening extravaganza. Never since the annual conference had been founded in 1954 had so many world leaders and dignitaries attended, over two hundred of the most important present. The rulers of the world under one roof, this year’s conference no longer limited to Europe and North America. For the first time a Russian was here, one of the most powerful men in that country.

The notable absences were representatives from China which was being made a pariah on the world stage. No matter, there were enough countries represented here to do the job. China had already been dealt with.

Claude sat at the back, soaking in the atmosphere, those on his table trying to engage him in futile small talk. Although he was the force of will behind this meeting, he allowed those with the inflatable egos to claim the limelight and had learnt that a simple smile and a nod were enough of a response for most of the self-possessed.

It didn’t matter how rich or powerful any of these humans were. They were still all vermin in his eyes, although they would serve their purpose well.

The people in this room cared little for the freedoms of their fellow man and had helped put in systems of control and oppression that were now being felt due to the lockdowns caused by the pandemic. Some were here because of money and power. Others were zealots, believing they could shape a better tomorrow by sacrificing the prosperity of the coming generations.

There were so many who would rather sell their souls than be exposed to the world at large.

And then there were those who had no choice but to be here, or face ruin and disgrace at Claude’s hands. Claude had the dirt on so many of them, scandalous information that the bought and paid for press would release in an instant. Decades of work had gone into that, politicians, celebrities, and business leaders all falling into well-orchestrated honey pots. Occasionally, he met a man or woman who couldn’t be tricked or bought. He had ways to get to them too. That was when Devlin came into play, the network of The Enlightened assassinating those who, by their own noble actions, made themselves a threat to the new order.

Claude and his network had been busy. There was a lot you could achieve when you had more money than you could count, and you lived up to five times the years of the average human.

“The vaccination program is ahead of schedule,” the speaker up front said proudly. On the screen behind him, a list of countries with the percentages of adults vaccinated was visible. The vaccine, the saviour of the world from CRS, made by the four pharmaceutical companies that had all jumped on the research released by Doctor Mo before his disappearance. Claude was well aware of what had happened to his cousin, but the world was none the wiser of Mo’s true identity. A loss to the cause, but not catastrophic.
